This policy explains the cookies and similar technologies BrightStudy uses on its website, what each one does, how long it lasts, and how you can choose which ones are allowed. It works alongside our Privacy Policy.
Cookies are small text files a website stores in your browser. Similar technologies, such as browser local storage, keep information on your device in the same way. Some are set by the site you are visiting (“first-party”), and some by other services whose content appears on that site (“third-party”).
The law in the UK and the EU (the Privacy and Electronic Communications Regulations and the ePrivacy Directive) lets a site use cookies that are strictly necessary for a service you asked for. Every other cookie needs your consent first.
These cookies are set by BrightStudy and are needed for the site to work. They are always on and cannot be switched off in cookie settings.
| Name | Purpose | Duration |
|---|---|---|
| session | Keeps you signed in. Secure and HTTP-only, so page scripts cannot read it. | 7 days |
| sp_oauth_state | Protects the step where you connect your Spotify account. | 10 minutes |
| bs_consent | Remembers your cookie choice and a random ID used as our record of that choice. | 6 months |
When you make a cookie choice, we record it with its random ID, the date and, if you are signed in, your account. This is our proof of consent. It also means your choice follows you when you sign in on another device. The record is deleted along with your account.
Some study material and features embed players from other services. These providers may set their own cookies, which can track you across sites, as soon as the player loads. That is why they only load after you allow “Embedded media”. Until you do, you see a placeholder with a button to allow them.
| Provider | Where it appears | Their policy |
|---|---|---|
| YouTube (Google) | Videos in documents and YouTube uploads. We use YouTube’s privacy-enhanced mode where possible. | Google cookie policy |
| Vimeo | Videos embedded in documents | Vimeo cookie policy |
| Spotify | Study music player and the Spotify Premium player | Spotify cookie policy |
| TikTok | Videos embedded in documents | TikTok cookie policy |
| Instagram (Meta) | Posts and reels embedded in documents | Instagram cookie policy |
If you allow “Analytics”, we use Google Analytics to count visits and see which pages and features are used, so we can improve BrightStudy. We don’t send it your name, email or study content, and Google signals and advertising features are turned off. If you don’t allow it, Google Analytics never loads. If you withdraw your consent later, we delete these cookies.
| Name | Purpose | Duration |

| _ga_4SG204PQDW | Google Analytics: keeps track of the current visit. | 2 years |
See Google’s How Google uses information from sites that use its services.
BrightStudy uses your browser’s local storage to remember things you set or that keep your work safe. Examples are your theme, view and sort order, tutor voice, sound and volume, sidebar and panel state, and autosaved drafts you haven’t saved yet. This information stays on your device, is not used to track you, and is only kept because you asked for that feature. You can clear it at any time in your browser settings.
We serve web fonts from our own servers, so opening a page does not send your IP address to Google. Some pages load code libraries from public content delivery networks (jsDelivr, unpkg and cdnjs). These networks receive the technical details any web request carries, such as your IP address, but they do not set cookies.
You can change or withdraw your choice at any time. Your new choice applies from then on.
“Cookie settings” is also in the account menu and the footer. You can also block or delete cookies in your browser, but if you block essential cookies you won’t be able to sign in. If your browser sends a Global Privacy Control (GPC) signal, we don’t show the cookie banner, and embedded media and analytics stay off unless you turn them on.
