Topic analysis

Know which topics are actually sinking in

Every flashcard and MCQ you study is tagged by topic. BrightStudy turns those tags into a health score for each one, so you can see exactly what is Strong, what is Critical, and what to study next.

How topics work

A topic is a tag, not a folder you maintain

You never set up a topic list by hand. BrightStudy reads the tags already on your flashcards and MCQs and builds the picture from there.

01

Tags, not folders

A topic is any tag on a flashcard or MCQ, so the list grows as you study, not as you file things away.

02

Four tag levels

Topic, knowledge type, concept and micro-tag are set automatically when a flashcard or MCQ is created.

03

Every answer counts

A right answer scores every tag on that item up; a wrong answer scores them down.

04

No tags yet? Folders fill in

Until you have studied tagged material, BrightStudy uses your Vault’s top-level subjects instead.

05

One row, both methods

Flashcards and MCQs on the same topic merge into a single row, not two separate ones.

Topic health

Five bands, from Strong to Critical

Every topic you have studied gets a band, worked out from its accuracy over the period you pick.

Band 1

Strong

90% or more. Keep it ticking over.

Band 2

Going well

75–89%. A little more practice to make it strong.

Band 3

Developing

60–74%. Getting there. Worth a regular session.

Band 4

Needs attention

45–59%. Results are slipping. Make it a priority.

Band 5

Critical

Under 45%. Start here.

Band 6

Not started / no data

Nothing studied yet, or nothing in the period you picked.

The topic table

Health & accuracy

  • Health: one of five bands, Strong to Critical, or Not started / no data.
  • Accuracy: your right-answer rate across flashcards and MCQs carrying that tag.

MCQs & flashcards

  • MCQs: correct over attempted for that topic, in the period you picked.
  • Flashcards: the same, from flashcard reviews.

Due & trend

  • Due: how many items carrying that tag are due for review right now.
  • Trend: accuracy up or down against the previous period of the same length.

Last studied

  • The most recent flashcard review or MCQ answer carrying that tag.
Behind the numbers

How a topic’s health is actually worked out

Nothing is self-reported. Every number on the table comes from your real answers.

Every tag is scored

A right answer scores every tag on that item up by one; a wrong answer scores them down, across flashcards and MCQs alike.

Accuracy follows your range

Switch between 7 days, 30 days and all time, and accuracy, MCQs, flashcards and trend all recalculate for that window.

A band appears

90% or more is Strong; under 45% is Critical, with three bands in between.

Mastery tiers roll up too

The same six mastery tiers behind your flashcards average into a per-topic distribution chart.

How it works

From a tag to a plan, in five steps

You do not set any of this up. It builds itself as you study.

  1. 1

    Upload your notes

Slides, PDFs, handwritten pages, recordings or a YouTube lecture.

  2. 2

    Tags are added automatically

Flashcards and MCQs get a topic, knowledge type, concept and micro-tag as they are made.

  3. 3

    Study as normal

Every review and every answer scores the tags on that item.

  4. 4

    Topics take shape

Each one gets a health band and a mastery tier as results come in.

  5. 5

    See what needs you

The topic table, and your AI study brief, point straight at what is weakest.

Feeds your AI brief

Your weakest topics drive what BrightStudy tells you to study

Behind the scenes, every topic also gets a readiness score from its documents’ test engagement and accuracy. Your dashboard’s AI brief reads that score alongside your upcoming exams and due reviews, then ranks what to study right now — see AI brief on the progress page for the full picture.

What counts as a "topic"?
Any tag on a flashcard or MCQ. If you have not studied tagged material yet, BrightStudy falls back to your Vault’s top-level subject folders instead.
How is topic health worked out?
From your accuracy across flashcards and MCQs carrying that tag, in the period you pick. Bands run Strong (90%+), Going well, Developing, Needs attention and Critical (under 45%).
What are the four tag levels, and do I have to add them myself?
Topic, knowledge type, concept and micro-tag. They are set automatically when a flashcard or MCQ is created — the MCQ editor shows all four as separate fields; on flashcards they sit in one editable tag list.
Can I search, filter and sort the topic table?
Yes. Search by name, filter by health band or by method (MCQs or flashcards), sort by most recent, weakest, strongest or name, and choose how many rows to show.
What do accuracy, due and trend mean?
Accuracy is your right-answer rate in the period you picked. Due is how many items carrying that tag are due for review now. Trend compares accuracy with the previous period of the same length.
Where else do my topics show up?
Every document you study gets its own "Topics from this document" grid, built from that document’s flashcard and MCQ tags and sorted by coverage or A–Z.
Does this feed my AI study brief?
Yes. Your dashboard’s AI brief reads a per-topic readiness score alongside your upcoming exams and due reviews, then ranks what to study next. See progress.
Is topic analysis on the Free plan?
The dashboard’s AI brief is on every plan. The full analytics page, including the Topics tab, is on paid plans. Compare plans.
